Description
Originating in Ireland, everything about the Variegated Boxleaf Azara is elegant. It is a large evergreen shrub or small tree growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide with an upright, fountain-like form. Responfding very well to pruning, lower branches can be removed to a desired height to form a highly attractive small tree. Its gracefully arching, layered branches are clothed with tiny, 1/2″ long, boxwood-like, gleaming leaves that are creamy white with a splash of dark green in the center throughout the year. In late winter to early spring, tufted yellow flowers, resembling those of Sarcococca (Sweetbox), adorn the plant exuding a delicious fragrance of what some say smells like sweet chocolate or cocoa, while others say vanilla or white chocolate. The flowers are followed in summer by attractive orange-red berries. A sophisticated specimen providing unique and outstanding texture, color and form in the landscape or home foundation planting where it can be used to frame corners or as a espalier. Stands out really well against the dark background of a woodland border and is perfect for use in courtyard settings that protect from harsh winter winds. Also nice in containers for situating on and around sunny to partially shaded patios and other outdoor sitting and living spaces, where it is sure to be a conversation piece. In hot-summer climates it will prefer filtered sun or shade during the afternoon. Prefers mild to cool-summer climates in USDA Zones 7b to 11.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 15 to 20 feet tall and 8 to 10 feet wide with no pruning, The Variegated Boxleaf Azara can be grown as a graceful looking large shrub or small tree ideal for use in sunny to partially shaded landscape and woodland borders or home foundation plantings. Simply remove lower branches to a desired height to form a highly attractive multi- or single-stem tree. It responds well to pruning for shaping as desired so can be situated in smaller garden spaces or in containers as well. A fine addition to white gardens, fragrance gardens, bird gardens, cottage gardens, woodland gardens and Asian and Zen gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 6 feet apart for solid hedges; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Variegated Boxleaf Azara is easy to grow in most any moist but well-drained soil of average fertility, including clay, and full sun to partial shade. Where summers are really hot it will prefer filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours or all-day filtered sun. Established plants are tolerant of dry shade. No pruning is necessary however responds well to it for shaping purposes, tree forming and size control. Prefers mild to cooler climates in USDA Zones 7b to 11. Where winter winds can be harsh, it benefits from a sheltered west or south facing site or courtyard setting.
