Description
An easy-to-grow North American native, ‘Snowbird’ is one of if not the most fragrant of the fragrant of Azaleas growing in our gardens. It is a hybrid cross selected by Biltmore Gardens of Rhododendron atlanticum and Rhododendron canscens, which explains its flower color and potent sweet fragrance. In mid spring it features profuse clusters of delicate, trumpet shaped, pink-flushed white flowers that will fill a garden with a wonderfully sweet aroma, which is sure to draw in and also please the butterflies. Fall brings a second color show when the handsome blue-green foliage transitions to beautiful orange, red and yellow shades. Thriving in both coastal and inland sunny to partially shaded gardens,Snowbird forms a rounded natural-looking shrub 4 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide over time. An annual light pruning after flowering can be performed for size control to fit smaller garden spaces or when grown in containers. So wonderfully fragrant!
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, the Snowbird Fragrant Coastal Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a natural hedge in partially shaded landscape and woodland borders. It also grows well in containers that can be situated on patios and around other outdoor living spaces where the pretty flower and fragrance can be enjoyed from close up, or even indoors as a year round houseplant. A fine selection for fragrance gardens, Azalea gardens, woodland gardens, white theme gardens, and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 4 feet apart for hedge or grouping; 8 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
The Snowbird Coastal Azalea is easy to grow in a light, acidic, sandy, well-drained soil and full sun to part shade. That said, we think it looks more at home in a partially shaded envirnment that receives some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours. if you do grow it in full sun, keep in mind that the foliage may scorch if the soil is not kept uniformly moist. Consistent moisture is best, but keep in mind that soils must drain well. Poor drainage inevitably leads to root rot. It is very low-maintenance, requiring little if any pruning. That said, occasionally we might prune a stray branch that is spoiling the natural form of the plant and snip off spent flower stems immediately after the bloom to encourage a fuller plant, but that’s up to you. A light annual pruning after flowering can be performed for size control and shaping purposes.
