Description
One of the strongest and sturdiest of the Bee Balms we’ve grown in our gardens, and a nice new color among Monarda, ‘Purple Rooster’ is a super-hardy native selection featuring abundant, crown-shaped, shaggy and showy clusters of tubular, nectar-rich, royal purple flowers. The clusters are perched atop very sturdy stems all summer long with no need for staking. A hummingbird and beneficial pollinator dream flower and also excellent for cutting and use in flower arrangements. You might be interested to know that the rich green, mint-scented foliage is mildew-resistant and can be used in salads or to make an herbal tea. Purple Rooster is not finicky about soil type, however does prefer a consistently moist but well-drained soil and plenty of sun We suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Excellent for garden beds and containers and a must in hummingbird and beneficial pollinator gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing in an upright clump to around 3 feet tall and 2 feet wide, the Purple Rooster Bee Balm is ideal for use as an accent in smaller garden spaces and containers or in groupings in perennial borders or along paths, walkways or around patios and other outdoor living spaces where the pretty flowers and hummingbirds feeding can be enjoyed from close up. A fine addition to butterfly, hummingbird and pollinator gardens, cut flower gardens, fragrance gardens, native gardens, purple theme gardens, herb gardens and cottage gardens.
Suggested Spacing:Â 18″ apart for mass plantings or groupings; 4 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Bee Balm is easy to grow in most any consistently moist but well-drained humusy, fertile soil and full sun or part shade. We suggest 4 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Morning sun is suggested in order to dry dew from the leaves. Plant with the top of the root ball level with the ground. In full sun, mulch plants with an inch or so of straw or bark mulch to help retain soil moisture during summer. Feed as directed on the product label with a natural or organic plant food. Pruning is not necessary however deadheading spent flowers will encourage heavier rebloom. Plants can be cut to the ground after going completely dormant in winter.
