Description
An extremely cold hardy azalea developed and bred for cold hardiness by the University of Minnesota to withstand temperatures down to -40F, ‘Lemon Lights’ is a vigorous selection and very easy to grow in Zones 4a to 7b (4a-8b in cool-summer climates). Abundant large clusters of fragrant, trumpet-shaped lemon-yellow flowers with ruffled petals put on a spectacular show lighting up the garden in spring with a possible rebloom in fall. The early season beneficial pollinators will also appreciate this glowing beauty. Rich green foliage emerges after the bloom turning to attractive purple shades in fall. One of those “must have” masterpiece plants for northern gardens.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 4 to 5 feet tall and equally as wide, the Lemon Lights Azalea is ideal for use as a specimen accent in small garden spaces or home foundation plantings or in groupings in sunny to partially shaded landscape or woodland borders. A fine selection for fragrance gardens, Azalea and Rhododendron gardens, woodland gardens, pollinator gardens, yellow theme gardens, and cottage gardens.
Spacing: 8′ or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Lemon Lights Azalea is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained acidic soil of average to high fertility and sun to part shade. Some suggest full sun tolerance throughout the zones where it is listed hardy, however, we always like to play it safe. Therefor, in hot-summer climates we suggest some filtered sun or shade during the hot afternoon hours. Once established plants are moderately drought tolerant, requiring supplemental water only during periods of dry summer weather. Very low-maintenance, requiring little if any pruning. That said, occasionally we might prune a stray branch that is spoiling the natural form of the plant.
