Description
One of the most cold hardy Gardenia we offer, the Heaven Scent Gardenia is a repeat bloomer that puts on a huge show in mid to late spring when it produces an abundance of intensely fragrant daisy-like flowers then reblooming through summer. The flowers are followed red, yellow and orange seed pods that add extra appeal through fall season. Heaven Scent has some of the deepest deep foliage of any gardenia we’ve seen on an upright form that is perfect for growing in garden beds or pots, planters and other containers. Plant this fragrant wonder near windows, porches, decks and other outdoor living spaces where you can enjoy the sweet aroma from up close.

Growing 3 to 4 feet tall and wide, the Heaven Scent Gardenia is ideal for use as an accent, in groupings or as a wonderfully fragrant low hedge in home foundation plantings and landscape borders. Because they like a break from the midday afternoon sun and cold northwesterly winds, Gardenia are best planted on the east side of the home or other structures. Needless to say Gardenias are a perfect fit for sensory gardens and near windows or outdoor living spaces where the fragrance can be enjoyed. A fine addition to white theme gardens.

Note:Â Â For our customers who live and garden north of USDA Plant Hardiness Zone 6b, where this Gardenia variety is not winter hardy outdoors, you can enjoy it in containers that can be moved indoors during winter and placed back outside when temperatures warm up in spring.
Growing Preferences
Gardenia are exceptionally easy to grow in moist but well-drained soils of average fertility and part sun, preferably morning sun with some shade or filtered sun in the mid afternoon hours. As with so many other ornamental plants, constantly soggy or wet soils can cause root rot or other plant diseases. The east side of the home or other tall structure is a perfect spot. Soil pH is important!
To flower their best and maintain deep green foliage color, all Gardenia require an acid to moderately acid soil ranging from 4.5 to 6.0 on the pH scale. If your soil is alkaline foliage will turn pale-green to yellow and flowering will be diminished.
Soil pH is a measurement of the alkalinity or acidity of soil and is measured on a scale of 1-14, with 7 as the neutral mark. Any measurement below 7 indicates acid soil conditions, and anything above 7 indicates alkaline. If you’re unsure about the pH of your soil and whether or not it’s suitable for growing Gardenia it’s a good idea to test the soil pH in the planting area. You can quickly test soil pH with an inexpensive soil pH tester probe. To raise the pH (make more alkaline) you can add pelletized limestone to the soil. To lower the pH (make more acid) you can apply Soil Sulfur, Aluminum Sulfate, or Chelated Iron. Adding organic compost to the soil or using compost as mulch can also help to increase acidity and maintain acid soil conditions.

I love the smell of gardenia blooms since my childhood. I have ordered gardenia by mail several times. Those were tiny and only survived a couple of New England winters. I have come to think I could not keep gardenia healthy since I live in Northeast, until I have found Heaven scent and Summer snow varieties. This plant from Wilson Bros is a very impressive specimen, like the ones I have seen in gardens that you pay to visit, It is about 14 inches tall and wide, packed with deep green and shiny leaves. I have repotted it to a 15 inch pot as it has completely outgrown the 2-gallon pot it came in. I will move it in the unheated garage for the winter, as it is hardy to zone 6b and I live in zone 6a.
