If you like plants that produce many colors of flowers all on the same plant you’re gonna love the Butterfly Rose. From spring to frost, the old garden shrub rose produces abundant clusters of slightly fragrant, butterfly-shaped, 3-inch single flowers in various shades of pink, yellow, orange, fuchsia and white. We’ve had this long-lived old garden shrub rose in our gardens for decades and can say from experience that this is one of the easiest roses you’ll ever grow.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 4 to 6 feet tall and equally as wide, the Chinese Butterfly Rose is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, or as a colorful hedge in landscape and flowering shrub borders. A fine addition to rose gardens, cottage gardens and Asian theme gardens.

Growing Preferences

When planted right and in the right spot, the Butterfly Rose is one of the easiest roses you’ll ever grow. It grows best in moist but well-drained slightly acidic and loamy soils in full sun to part shade. The best flowering and disease resistance generally occur in full sun. As with most other roses, morning sun to dry dew from the leaves is a must! Supplemental water during dry periods will be appreciated. Mulch helps retain moisture, keeps roots cool and discourages weeds. Spent flowers can be removed to encourage rebloom. Prune as needed in late winter to early spring.
