Description

The Box Leaf Honeysuckle, Lonicera pileata, is a low-growing evergreen to semi-evergreen shrub with horizontal branches that will root in and slowly spread over time, making it a great choice as a groundcover on banks or slopes or low borders or natural or clipped formal hedge in landscape borders and garden beds. Its small, boxwood-like dark green leaves provide a unique texture in the landscape, and its tiny flowers are a wonderful honeysuckle-like fragrance during spring and summer. The butterflies, hummingbirds, and beneficial pollinators are attracted to the flowers, and the birds will love the purple berries that follow. It is salt tolerant, easy to grow, and adaptable, so it does well in coastal and seashore plantings. It is drought tolerant once established if grown in the shade, but it will appreciate some supplemental water during a drought when growing in full sun.

Landscape & Garden Uses

Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and 5 to 8 feet wide depending on pruning, the Boxleaf Honeysuckle is ideal for use as a textural and sensory accent in small garden spaces or as a grouping or mass planting on slopes and embankments. Also excellent in groupings or as a low border where space allows in sunny or shady landscape borders and garden beds or home foundation plantings. A fine addition to Asian or English gardens, formal gardens, topiary gardens, fragrance gardens, butterfly and hummingbird gardens, bird gardens, cottage gardens and shady Xeriscape gardens (low water needs).

Growing Preferences

Box Leaf Honeysuckle is very easy to grow in a moist but well-drained soil of average fertility and full sun or part shade. It is drought tolerant in shade but will require some supplemental water during drought in full sun. In hot summer climates it will prefer some filtered sun or shade during the afternoon hours. It is slat tolerant so excellent for coastal gardens. It responds very well to shearing for formal hedges. In our gardens, we’ve found it to have excellent resistance to pests and disease.
