The Blue Crown Passion Flower is a fast-growing vine hailing from South America, where it is the national flower of Paraguay, but also loves life in North America, Europe, and other parts of the world. It won the prestigious Award of Garden Merit from the Royal Horticultural Society for many good reasons. From early summer through early fall it showcases some of the most exotic and stunning flowers you’ve ever seen. The complex, saucer-shaped flowers have a diameter of 3 inches, and exhibit a lower ring of white petals with a ring of tricolor blue, white, and red filaments floating just above. Protruding from the center of the flower are 3 purple styles, and 5 greenish-yellow stamens, which are irresistibly attractive to butterflies. Following the flowers are edible, egg-shaped fruits that turn from green to yellow and then bright orange by late summer to fall. While the fruits are edible, the taste is bland. The lush foliage consists of palmate, 3 to 9-lobed shiny green leaves 4 to 6 inches wide. In Zones 9 its foliage is semi-evergreen and deciduous in Zones 6 through 8. North of Zone 6 it is best grown in pots or hanging baskets that can be moved inside when temperatures drop below 40 degrees. Blue Crown Passion Vine is perfect for growing on a fence, wall, pillar, rail, post, pole, trellis, obelisk, arch, arbor, or pergola, and will even climb trees. A twining tendril at the base of each leaf helps the vine to climb and cling to structures and walls, without doing any damage to their surfaces.
