Description
A wonderful North American native flowering perennial that prefers life on the moist side, Balmy Purple Monarda, commonly known as Bee Balm, blooms earlier than other varieties thereby extending the Bee Balm blooming season in the garden. From late spring through mid summer it produces abundant, showy, shaggy looking round clusters packed with rosy purple, nectar-rich tubular flowers on compact, 12 inch tall mounds of attractive blue-green foliage. Both its flowers and rich blue-green foliage exude a pleasant minty fragrance, and the hummingbirds, butterflies and other beneficial pollinators will appreciate you for planting it. The flowers are perched atop sturdy square stems which makes them excellent for cutting and use in floral arrangements. Balmy Pruple likes plenty of sunshine and a conistently moist soil so is a perfect asset for those sunny areas of the garden where the soil tends to stay wet.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 12 inches tall and 18 inches or so wide, Balmy Pruple Bee Balm is ideal for use as an accent or in groupings in sunny areas of the garden where the soil tends to stay moist to even wet. Perfect around ponds and boggy areas. A fine addition to butterfly and hummingbird gardens, beneficial pollinator gardens, bog gardens, perennial gardens, cottage gardens, and purple theme gardens.
Suggested Spacing: 15 to 18 inches apart for solid groupings; 3 feet or more for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Balmy Purple Bee Balm is exceptionally easy to grow and care for in most any consistently moist to wet soil of average fertility and full to mostly sun. We suggest 6 hours or more of direct sunlight per day. Too much shade and flowering will be diminished and plants may flop. After blooming the plants can be cut back by half their height which encourages a flush of fresh new growth.
