Description
If you like the enchanting, old-time flower look and feel, you’re going to absolutely love Agnes O Solomon, a fall-blooming Camellia sasanqua that is one of the first to bloom in the early cold days of fall. At this time, the plant is literally smothered with beautiful, semi-double to peony form flowers with wavy, soft pink to shell-pink petals suffused with a glowing antique white that surround a boss of yellow center stamens. Shiny evergreen leaves are dark green throughout the year and provide an excellent backdrop for the flowers. Agnes O Solomon is an upright, tall growing shrub which means lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree for use around the patio or in foundation plantings and outdoor living spaces. A truly spectacular selection for gardeners who love Camellias.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 10 to 14 feet tall and 6 to 8 feet wide (depending on pruning), the beautiful Agnes O Solomon Camellia is ideal for use as a specimen, in groupings, as a hedge or background plant, and is especially nice as espalier (trained to grow flat against a wall) or between windows in home foundation plantings. Lower branches can be removed to form a highly attractive small tree perfect for use as a focal point specimen in home foundation plantings, partially shaded landscape and woodland borders, and near patios and other outdoor living spaces. A fine addition to Camellia gardens, pink theme gardens, cottage gardens, cut flower gardens and woodland borders. Also suitable for containers that can be brought indoors during winter by those who live above USDA Zone 7a, where this Camellia variety is not reliably winter hardy. Find Your Zone
Suggested Spacing: 5 to 6 feet apart for solid hedge; 12 feet or more apart for space between plants
Growing Preferences
Camellia adapt well to various soil types however prefer a moist but well-drained acidic soil that is rich in organic matter. Constantly soggy soil is a slow killer. In general, Camellia grows and blooms better in partial shade with some shelter from the hot afternoon sun. Morning sun with afternoon shade or filtered sunlight is perfect. All-day filtered sun is fine.
