Adam’s Thread & Needle Yucca is easy to grow in most any moist to dry well-drained soil of average to low fertility in full sun or part shade. It is not particular about soil type but does require the soil to have a neutral pH ranging between 6.5 to 7.5 on the pH scale. It is highly drought tolerant when established. No maintenance required except to remove spent flower stalks, which we do after the fruits have turned brown.

Description
The Adam’s Thread & Needle Yucca is a long-lived and extremely easy-to-grow North American native evergreen flowering shrub that almost anyone, anywhere in the United States can grow in full sun to part shade in USDA Zones 4a-10b. It forms an attractive clump of sword-shaped, grey green leaves 2 to 3 feet tall and 3 to 4 feet wide. On average, the leaves are up to 18 inches long and 2 to 3 inches wide displaying curly thread-like filaments, hence the common name. In late spring to early summer thick stalks rising high above the foliage are topped with an enormous, tower-like cluster of bell-shaped, creamy white flowers with a wonderful fragrance reminiscent of jasmine. The flowers are edible, tasting somewhat like artichoke, and can be used fresh in salads, cooked in soups or stews, or roasted. Edible fruits follow the flowers, which are most often roasted or baked, having a sweet, molasses or fig-like flavor. Exceptionally low-maintenance, this Yucca is tolerant of poor and dry soil, heat and cold (-30F), salt spray and blazing sun, and you might be happy to know the deer and rabbits won’t touch it. Excellent in garden beds and containers and looks right at home in sunny to partially shaded rock gardens and the Xersicape (low water needs).
Wildlife Benefits
Hummingbirds, moths, small mammals, and songbirds are attracted to the plant, but it is pollinated by specialized moths called yucca moths, which have a symbiotic relationship with the plant.
Landscape & Garden Uses
Growing 2 to 3 feet tall and 4 feet wide or so, Adam’s Thread & Needle Yucca is ideal for use as a specimen in small garden spaces or in groupings or mass plantings in sunny to partly shaded larger landscape borders and home foundation plantings. Excellent for use on dry slopes and looks very nice around garden ponds and boulders. Also sutiable as a solo or centerpiece in containers of 16 inches or more in diameter. A fine addition to rock gardens, tropical look gardens, desert gardens, native gardens, perennial gardens, rock gardens and the Xeriscape (low water needs). We like combining Yucca with other low water need plants such as junipers, barberry, abelia, ornamental grasses, and loropetalum.
Suggested Spacing: 6 feet or more apart for space between plants
